About me

Al Hill (He/They) is a trans non binary artist and activist living and making in South London. Through their work they explore their gender that exists outside the binary of “male” and “female” and the journey of social and medical transition. As a transgender person, Al does not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. Al’s work seeks to unpick teachings around traditionally feminine techniques such as sewing, embroidery, quilting and weaving (things that are typically taught to girls from a young age) to read new trans inclusive narratives into those historical processes. Through the use of craftivism he works these techniques in his visual activism that reaches other trans people. Through the use of these soft and tactile mediums Al seeks to bring positive affirmation to those who also are struggling with gender and the current binary system. Their work is focused on the domestic side of queer identities and relationships, especially the places that queer people inhabit despite oppressive systems. It is important that trans-artists represent their communities struggles to act as a catalyst for change, that is true, but it is equally important to show that transgender people experience happiness, comfort and joy. For people who may be questioning their gender, or who have not yet understood the livelihoods of Trans people, it’s important to give them this information in a way that is accessible and approachable. Al seeks to place themselves within trans-feminist discourse and in the wider contextual area of queer art. As a visual activist, many of Al’s projects are community focused and exist outside of oppressive institutions- although many of the works that Al creates also seek to infiltrate that space.
