BA (Hons) Theatre and Screen: Costume Interpretation
Being interested in Victorian maternity wear, I was amazed to discover that women wore corsets during pregnancy for a number of different reasons. The main reason being to conceal the bump for employment purposes but mainly to conform to the fashionable hourglass silhouette. I visited 12 original maternity corsets around the country & using an original 1892 pattern created my own interpretation of a historical 19th century maternity corset.
Inside Maternity Corset
Inside of my maternity corset has no raw edges as I constructed it with a 'sandwich' technique of which I used 2 layers of linen & coutil to enclose between the next panel then fold around.
