In 2005 an unknown creature was found washed up on the Exmouth beach, the body was seized, and evidence was removed. The specimen was clearly aquatic but had features that suggest a primate, or possibility even direct human, relationship. The body was handed to an underground "scientist" for a deeper analysis.
I was inspired to create a mermaid by a costume I designed for my partner, I wanted to do more but I wanted to work more within my style and move away from the traditional beauty of mermaids into horror and science, I researched heavily into deep-sea creatures and human form and how they could be combined in as realistic a way as possible.
The mermaid was constructed with a silicone skin and a low-density foam core to try and get a weight and movement that was appropriate for a dead body.
