I decided to explore the history of witches and how they represent the 'misfit woman' in history. The more I researched into different cultures, stories and events surrounding witches and I quickly realised how they are a symbol of the oppressed woman, dictated by patriarchy as the way that the witch has been personified in historical texts such as the Malleus Maleficarum to children's stories to artwork by Goya, they are visual representations of what men tell women not to be (old, sexual, ugly, fat etc). I have also looked at Angela Carter's short story The Snow Child, a gothic retelling of Snow White as she uses beautiful, gothic symbolism to create her stories, this one is a metaphor of how women are subjected to objectification and manipulation by a man. I’m using 1977 punk and 90s grunge as an aesthetic theme as this was an iconic subculture where gender roles were reversed through fashion as women were dressing more aggressively and masculine, yet still celebrating their femininity by exposing their body. The witches in my project are the witches who have overcome the restrictions from a patriarchal society.
