The costume represents Mother Earth, clad in gold and crystals to symbolise the mineral riches of the environment and the magnetism of prospecting for gold that attracts people to dangerous and often illegal mines. As the quest for gold destroys the beauty of the natural environment so the costume will transform as the forest itself is annihilated.
When the treasures of the Earth have been exhausted, the performer is left apparently naked, in a flesh coloured body stocking, broken-down and covered only by designs based on Karajá body paint.
The second character is inspired by “Aruanã” an important figure in Karajá ceremonies who represents the first of the tribe. Aruanã is associated with the beginning of life but also with death. The costume symbolises that if left to recover, Mother Earth will reclaim the wasteland created by men and the forest will re-grow.
