In the Moon that Broucek visits, the colony of artists he finds there is reminiscent of the flower power movement of the late 1960s that included Tropicália. The Tropicália movement celebrated Brazilian cultural influences including Carmen Miranda and African inspired music from the North East of Brazil, combining them with rock music and hippy psychedelia.
In my design for Etherea I use prints and fabrics from the African influenced culture of the North East of Brazil and pay homage to Carmen Miranda who was an inspiration for the Tropicália movement. Carmen Miranda was inspired by the costume of the Bahiana women of the North East and she adapted it to become her signature look. I have taken the same inspiration for Etherea’s costume although I have kept the traditional crinoline shape of the Bahiana skirt.
My design for Etherea’s skirt has also been influenced by Romero Britto the contemporary Brazilian artist whose work is a patchwork of many bright colours.
