Yiming’s master project offers a playful combination of the book as a historical artefact and the emoji as a global visual contemporary language, to create a collection that explores juxtaposition within communication and culture. Yiming replaces the written word in a book format with illustrative symbols embedded into wearable book-like accessories. Traditional book-binding techniques are employed to construct jewellery and accessories that embed emojis as an expressive language. No longer seen as digital symbols, the emojis are instead embossed, printed and foiled onto paper and leather. The final works give critical perspective on how global language merged with global integral understanding of objects can physically manifest into new representations of familiar material culture.
