When you become a social outsider in the context of the electronic age, who will pay attention to your existence? The theme of my new normal project is to design a series of posters with the health QR code as the design object.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the health QR code was used as an electronic health certificate which improved the standard of living of ordinary people, but the complicated use method hindered the normal life of the elderly. In order to increase social attention to the negative impact of electronic applications on the elderly, I am committed to improving the complexity of information and reducing the readability of fonts, so that young people can feel the inconvenience of the elderly using electronic products from both visual and psychological aspects.

I have always tried to use the language of graphic design to reflect controversial social topics. Is the development of the contemporary technological revolution at the cost of abandoning the elderly? In order to show this social topic more intuitively and impactfully, I started from empathy, and made the familiar text and images in electronic applications to the greatest degree of complexity and defamiliarization. Let young people really feel the frustration of being an outsider in the electronic age. At the visual level, I visualized fonts and images into different levels of lines by stretching and squeezing. Psychologically, I remove the ability of text to carry information, and replace the appearance of text with source code to improve the difficulty of reading. In terms of typography, I broke the traditional size and layout of graphic design and gave the poster a browser media capability to achieve the most complicated information.

I think this project is a subversive experiment on the communication of information in graphic design theory. I hope that my work can arouse the reflection of young people and young designers. Let us designers not disregard certain groups and give more consideration to the interests of elderly users in future designs.

Information explosion

Excess information is squeezed into different levels of lines. This design technique is a reflection on the mandatory process of China's electronic age.

Marginalization

The elderly should not be the victims of the forward power of the electronic age. Our designers should not ignore the needs of special people in future designs.
