Unmaking the menstruating body is a visual investigation on the historical depiction of the female reproductive anatomy, and its influence on today’s women’s image of their body when menstruating. It consists of an installation with three separate collections. The work invites the audience to rethink the existing architecture of the female condition. The Wandering Organ shows how anatomical drawings of the female sex have changed over time. Photographs by the artist make a critique on how medical depictions have played a fundamental role in the degradation of the female body. Images explore the isomorphism of the drawings, evoking ideas of disgust, animality, and abnormality, traditionally attributed to women. Abuse Abstracts is a conceptual photography series of women’s underwear painted by the artist with her menstrual blood, exploring the emotional effects of abusive practices on women through the shape of the stains and the folding of the cloths. In Images of the Menstruating Body, photographs by the artist visualize women’s images of their body during menstruation, with texts describing their ideas.

I think women menstruating are sexy. Maybe I have this fantasy because I’ve met some girls who don’t feel comfortable with sex during menstruation. It’s like they feel they are not ready. Showing a bleeding vagina is still awkward, I would like it to become an empowering image.» Marta, 27

It’s not that someone has told me not to, but I would just be ashamed if I leave any stain. I think we all should dress in white when we menstruate. I will wear my dress in my next period so my body during menstruation looks as beautiful as it is my dress.» Clara, 15
