My project Together Alone, explores extended family, distance, loneliness and home as a personal experience. As someone who has never been close to extended family, coming from a culture that is strongly family orientated, I longed but struggled trying to fit in with them, while growing up without them. I attempt to capture this with a camera by using the physical space between my family and myself, showing an outsider looking in. The photos are taken at times I was surrounded by family, during my trips to Ecuador, its surroundings or home when they came to visit us in London. Consisting of fleeting, mundane and everyday moments, focusing on cropped details, motion and space. It is a sequence of 10 colour photographs, taken with digital and film compact cameras, which were small enough to carry around anywhere and carry the essence of a brief moment in time.
