This sculptural digital artwork is a monument to the fragile-yet-pervasive foundations of the Internet, and presents a new form of ruin aesthetics that are emerging from the modern Web. Merciless Entropy interrogates and confronts this ‘internet entropy’ as an often overlooked, and growing, part of the internet – a sprawling space that is lost in the loop of higher internet speed, hardware improvements, ‘web bloat’, and planned obsolescence. In the context of the Web, content decay manifests itself through the lack of interest in preserving that information or the deliberate interest in eliminating it, rather than a gradual degradation process. As a result, certain contents remain intact for 20 years, whereas a URL from yesterday’s news could already lead to a dead-end.
