I began by photographing the cover of pornographic magazines displayed on shelves in newsagents across London in order to explore notions of exposure and public display, of how images of sexuality are displayed and consumed publicly in the context of their commodification. Through the performance of the photographic act, I was exposed to the look of others at the same moment that I deployed a deliberate exercise in looking. This insight led me to ask: how do relationships of power emerge as a consequence of an exercise in scrutiny? How does it take place, and what are its effects upon photographic practice?
