Directed by Phene James, Sharo Liang, Kano Yanagiya The title ‘When We Close The Box’ refers to the closing of the coffin and the universal question of what happens after we die. It plays on varying imaginings of the afterlife, creating a journey out of death. Using a juxtaposition of Japanese TV footage and animated clay figures, this journey to the afterlife meets a fiery end. This short experimental film deals with cultural meanings and traditions, such as lotus flowers used in East Asian funerals and pomegranates from Greek mythology.
