In this project, I studied Charlotte Perkins Gilman's book; The Yellow Wallpaper, the story of a woman living in the late 1800’s who develops postnatal depression. Her husband attempts to cure her with rest by shutting her in her room for weeks on end. The book documents the protagonists slow descent into madness as she begins to see women crawling about in the yellow wallpaper of her room. The costume I created and designed was for an abstract interpretation of this character who, by the end of the book is consumed by the wallpaper, believing that she is the woman trapped within it. The costume is based around a metal frame and mounted on pram wheels to represent not only the infantilization of the protagonist, but the lack of control and helplessness of her situation.
