During our first year of the third term of our course at UAL, we collaborated with the 3D, makeup and prosthetics students to create a full character on the text 'Cabaret' (1966).
Consolidation and collaboration - Sally Bowles character design
These are a collection of photos of my designs for the character Sally Bowles from the text 'Cabaret' (1996). The makeup and hair were designed by Beau Tiger Wilson from the Makeup and Prosthetics course and the model was Sasha Neema Ponte.

The costume inspired by the context, an immersive production where the main character would enter the set and dream the characters, allowing us to create unusual and warped costumes. The setting of the text was 1920s Berlin, using this I based the style fo the undergarments off clothing of the period as well as the coat.

In my design for Sally Bowles I incorporated the contrast between the soft pink clothing, feminine and graceful to the fetish wear do the harness. The black lines contrast strongly, drawing attention to the lines painted along the body and the black of the hair. In addition, I used fur along the collar to reference to a fur coat that the character wears within the text that she is eventually forced to sell.

The makeup was inspired by the Russian artist, Alexej Georgewitsch von Jawlensky, who was chosen for our collaboration to enhance the deranged, dreamlike aspect of the performance.
Consolidation and collaboration - Ernst Ludwig character design
These are a collection of photos for my other designs from the text 'Cabaret' (1996), the character Ernst Ludwig is a smuggler who stands to showcase the changing opinions within Germany during the 1920s from the liberal to the dictatorship due to his support of the Nazi Party.

I was inspired by the idea of leather culture, incorporating the idea of authority and aspects of the Gestpo, the Nazi's secret police, into his clothing. The pants would be leather, wide and tucked into the boots to create the wide effect of officer's trousers alongside fetish wear to link it to the dominant side of his personality.

The character was to be quite oppressive in appearance, hence I choose to leave him without any hair and incorporated more of the brush strokes. His appearance was to be quite dramatic.
Consolidation and collaboration - Fraulein Kost character design
These photos are of the character Fraulein Kost, a prositute who works within the main character's reside. She represents the liberal part of Berlin, free in ideas and her attitudes towards relationships. However, she also represents how women struggled within the 1920s to earn an income.

In her design, I incorporated the element of texture and fetish wear, using lingerie to hint at her sexual nature and fur to link the 1920s in the style of the coat. It also linked back the character Sally Bowles whom has fur along the collar of her coat as well.

The coat, gloves and fetish wear pieces along her calves would be made from black latex, the shine contrasting with the dull appearance of the coat and making her more eye catching on stage.

The lingerie she would wear would be based on corsets of the period, moving towards a fuller figure with lacing along the back and sheer lace at the front to add detail to the character. The colours contrast strongly with Sally, the lightness of Sally's clothing make her appear almost child like in comparison to the dark tones of the worldly Fraulein Kost.
Consolidation and collaboration - Clifford Bradshaw character design
In these photos, I outline my design for the main character, Clifford Bradshaw. The character moves from England to Berlin to gain inspiration from his book and becomes deeply involved the loose culture of 1920s Berlin.

The character's design reflects a more submissive nature, his top is covering his enter body, alongside long trousers. I based the shapes off men's suits from the 1920s which feature a wide leg, these would be constructed from latex reflect the use of fetish wear and mark him as part of the performance. The character was to look almost formally dressed, thus he would be part of the group but different.

The colours of the clothing are quite simple, almost muted in their appearance along side the harsh lines of the harness along his front.
