The concept of my project stemmed from a forgotten phenomenon about the earth god’s shrine in Southern China, my hometown. The god is believed to protect the wealth of families. However, since it is too expensive for the working class to build an extravagant shrine, they resorted to building one in their homes, which is surrounded by the daily object. Some cannot afford a statue, so they only use a rock. Overall, this homely shrine exhibits the desire of the working class to protect their well-being. Finally, using a rock instead a statue makes their shrine more personal and representative of themselves, which could be seen as a portrait.
