Fashion piece for Shift London
So 2000 and late: the best trends from the early noughties and how to wear them.
A handpicked selection of the best MTV worthy Y2K trends and how to do them right
.
With the upcoming reboot of 2000s era defining fashion empire BabyPhat, Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian’s reignited friendship and the Jonas Brothers providing hits once more; the last of the 20 teens feels more like 05’ and our Spring wardrobes couldn’t be more thankful.
For some people, the early 2000s and its array of TBT looks might bring flashbacks of mood rings, Sun-In hair colouring and teen angst. But with the help of platforms like Depop and it’s Y2K hashtag, and the masses of 2000s inspo Instagram accounts, early 2000s fashion is back on trend. Maybe we’re craving for a simpler pre-Instagram time in our lives. Maybe we’re just really missing LiLo before she knew how to throw a party in Mykonos. Either way, here are the trends giving us major nostalgia and how you can wear them now.
Rimless Oversized Sunglasses

In previous seasons, thanks to the likes of the Jenners and Hadids, The Matrix and their tiny sunglasses have reigned supreme but it’s time for the futuristic glasses to make room for their larger versions. Although perhaps not providing much UV protection, large rimless glasses elevate any spring look and if you choose a darker shade, can hide a multitude of sins – perfect for those Sunday mornings. For this trend think Paris Hilton in every paparazzi picture ever in her 20s. Go full 2000s with a pink Juicy Couture style tracksuit or pair with a plain white vest and jeans for a more modern take on the look.

Body Chains

It’s 2006, The Hills is on TV, your Myspace is logged on, your Motorola flip phone is pink and Britney’s wearing a body chain. Seen gracing the debatably over sun-kissed hips of Christina Aguilera at the 2001 VMAs and the waist of Britney Spears with every pair of low waisted jeans, the bejewelled chain is the perfect spring accessory to add a touch of glamour. Wear as a belt or for those more willing to up the ante, tighten around the waist with a cropped tee.

Tie-Dye

The distant memory of filling buckets with dye and water is one of many a childhood but the wacky pattern is right on-trend this spring, seen on the runways of Calvin Klein, Dior and Ashley Williams. To avoid feeling like a Lizzie McGuire character with butterfly hair clips and scrunchies in tow, ditch tie dye in its T-shirt form and go for something form-fitting. Think crop tops and halters, for instance. Choose a monotoned piece with a muted colour for a more current spin on the throwback trend.

Camo Print

Before the days of Beychella and YouTube and straight from our screens showing MTV looping Destiny’s Child’s Survivor video comes camo. The military style print was always more hip-hop music video than reality show fodder and was often paired with a bare midriff and an abundance of accessories. For a less costume-like approach, wear the print in its cargo trouser form and pair with your favourite trainers for an effortless street wear feel still deserving of a 2007 MTV video feature.

Baby Tees

Seen on every ‘it’ girl of the 2000s, baby tees were a wardrobe staple. The mini cropped tees bared all and when paired with a brash designer logo, showed just how well these Valley girls could swipe their black cards. Thanks to the rise of Depop and vintage tees, the y2k style tee is back in time for spring – although perhaps better suited for a high waisted trouser choice than the low waisted companions of the early 2000s.

Throw it back to the heyday of pop culture with some of the best trends from the era when Paris was more known as a person than a place, when scarves were worn as tops and before Britney shaved it all off.
