Underground calling

Costume design and realisation for short film based on the Greek Myth "Orpheus and Eurydice". I have the opportunity to live far away from the centre of London. This gives me the chance to live near the nature. Next to my house there is a river that I have view to it from my window. The river is surrounded by trees and all kind of different plants. Even before we start working on this project I was long time watching the sky, the nature around me changing. I was continuously taking pictures of the weather changing. I was capturing the cloudy sky, the trees that were naked from leafs, fog between the trees that makes the picture grey and nostalgic. The shapes of the branches and the contrast of the colours, the green of the trees and the grey of the sky were big inspiration for me. My admiration for the English nature and landscapes was an element I wanted to include in the story and use it. These atmospheric grey landscape of England inspired me to imagine Persephone coming from the underworld. By spreading around a melancholic tone about Eurydice death, fogy landscapes would be the most appropriate to express this feeling. The connection Persephone has with the upper world is very much related with the nature as she is also goddess of spring, flowers and growth. This relation is expressed through the use of branches shapes on her dress. I created a separate layer as net, designed on the branches pattern I had from the pictures I had taken during my observation of the trees. This net is surrounding her whole body, it has also references to the roots that hold her connected to the two worlds, but at the same time trapped between. She is between, she has power in both worlds, she is free to move up and under, between the two layers but she is also in a way trapped in something in the middle.
