Slimy Futures is a material-research based project that investigates the potential of Kombucha material through various sustainable design processes. I have developed a collection of biodegradable Kombucha materials, inspired by my research on ocean and insect anatomy. Through a fermentation process of sugar, acetic acid and a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, the microorganisms spin cellulose together, creating a sustainable material on the surface of the liquid. Through harvesting the sustainable by product, I have experimented with a range of natural dyeing and printing techniques, developing a collection of Kombucha materials that vary from paper to leather-like properties. Slimy futures is a sustainable and biodegradable collection that aims to use local, abundant natural resources to produce a variety of different material qualities.
