I decided to create my own version of Macbeth and translate it to London in 1965. King Duncan is a wealthy nightclub owner, using it as a front for his criminal/gangster activities. Macbeth is an employee and gang member desperate to rise to the top and become rich. The witches can be translated as 1960’s psychics or tarot card readers. I have used Paul Raymond as inspiration for King Duncan because he was a very wealthy strip-club and property owner and named the “King of Soho” in the 1960s, and I think it would work well in the context of Macbeth. Charlie Watts has heavily influenced my designs for Macbeth- as his 60’s style is cool, but not garish. He wore masculine suits and his mod haircut inspired my hair choice for Macbeth too. I wanted to portray Lady Macbeth’s transition from a regular housewife, to someone who suddenly enters the big world of Soho in the 1960’s. I think her greed for power and money can be echoed on the clothes she decides to wear. She is stylish, and wants to look every inch like she belongs in the high society crowd she has entered. Her pre-power wardrobe will show her attempts to be like the stylish women she sees in magazines, and when she gains power and money- her wardrobe will be full of actual designer garments, and expensive accessories.
