The brief was to modify an existing typographic system to convey a message. Response: the religious overtone of the Bible format and blackletters were used to make a comment on the unquestioning belief of modern consumers in cult brands, specifically tech companies such as Google, Facebook and Apple. Using the Gutenberg typeface as the starting point, I created three bitmap blackletter fonts to connect the Bible and the digital nature of these companies. The fonts (Gutenbit 24, 42 and 60) are then used to display the history of Google, Facebook and Apple. Utilizing their bitmapped appearance, each font was made to be more refined than the last to reflect the tech giants’ progress of becoming more sophisticated both as brands and as cults.
