Gemma Lewis is a multimedia artist based in London. Her work is concerned with sexual politics, psychoanalysis and consumer desire. She is fascinated with how often our innermost desires are linked to consumption, obeying the empty unconscious wishes 'told' to us by contemporary consumer culture and global capitalism, infiltrating even our most intimate lives, beliefs, goals and feelings. Her art practice investigates these interests by exposing and subverting the mechanisms behind the seductive qualities inherent in images, particularly in advertising, highly stylised and viewed in an imagined state of delicious pleasure as an unfulfilled desire. Her work often takes cliches or femininity so far that it appears ironic or even violent. She is constantly searching for the sweet spot between seductive and sinister, desirable and disgusting, pleasurable and uncomfortable.
