BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting
In my studio practice, I investigate the subject of beauty based on the ideology of William Morris and explore the subjects further, while trying to establish my aesthetics. I think nowadays it is even harder to surround yourself with beauty than it was to Morris in his times. We are surrounded by more and more amount of goods, resulting in inconsistency and disorder. Morris focused on the beauty of everyday life stated, art is not only a matter of a painting but the whole surrounding; in my practice I’m reversing the idea, focusing on beautiful details of everyday life and by transferring them into painting I attempt to turn them into a matter of art. I try to focus on daily, for many rather unnoticeable compositions: through mould and pile of clothes to landscapes and patterns of nature, but also sentimental aspects, which highlight beauty as a matter of a subjective concern. I use realistic painting methods, but with a visible brush movement, which highlights the picturesque and decorative character. Under the influence of Morris’ ideology and Arts and Craft movement I recently decided to try my hand in the design and created my first wallpapers. After reading a lot about the role of craftsmanship in a society, the actual practice helped me understand its essentialism. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable experiences, with the most satisfactory results.
