BA (Hons) Costume for Theatre and Screen
Ever since a very young age I have been fascinated by the idea of personality and character and how it is portrayed visually. I have always found it interesting to explore personalities through their attire and discover the hidden meanings behind the cut and colour used. I am intrigued by the way so much information about an individual could be gathered just by looking at their garments and how an audience can be manipulated to develop certain ideas and prejudice based on what one wears. These interests allowed me to really understand the meaning and the necessity of costume design. As a costume design student at the University of the Arts London, I have managed to develop a great appreciation for cultural and period dress. My own style is often influenced by traditional garments from Russia and the Far East as I am very interested in these particular cultures as well as have good knowledge of them. I believe that my strengths lay in designing costumes for dance and movement pieces due to my history as a dancer. I have a good understanding of comfort and motion and therefore can design garments that accentuate movement and create specific effects.
