Living abroad made many international students feel more distant from their family, cultures and values. Thinking of ways to thread back to our “old selves” was a challenge. In the end, a small act of calling back home can make great differences. I chose the telephone booth as the setting, firstly because of the communicative symbol that it holds. Secondly, it allows us to feel most private in the public, and it is the most open and least discriminating place. Further, inspired by Harlow’s monkey experiment which proved that the tactility of cloth can imitate maternal embrace. I integrated these two concepts to form my campaign, creating a telephone box that provides warmth and vulnerability to international students in the public place.
