The Spice Girls reunion has sparked the comeback of the ultimate 90s trend - the platform Buffalo trainer.
The Spice Girls are coming back and so is the Buffalo trainer
The recent news of a possible Spice Girls comeback has excited us all and has bought with it the return of the platform trainer. The towering 3 inch Buffalo trainer is synonymous with Spice Girl style (excluding Posh of course).
The ugly trainer trend, heralded by the Balenciaga Triple S, has catapulted this 90s staple back into the limelight.
Towards the end of last year Buffalo relaunched the unisex trainer at notable London boutique, Browns, in two of its iconic styles. Followed by a collaboration with Opening Ceremony. Both partnerships were a success and a quick-fire sell-out.
Marketing manager at Buffalo London, Alexandra Preusche states “The Buffalo design still encapsulates that 90s attitude that is so relevant right now. So we have concentrated on updating the materials.”
As the 90s resurgence strides into 2018, the platform trainer is tipped to go mainstream. And our love affair with the decade doesn’t show signs of stopping anytime soon, as Friends hit Netflix earlier this year and the Spice Girls announced a possible reunion, the 90s influence on fashion is abuzz.
Though its uncertain whether the Buffalos will make it back on-stage with the Spice Girls, they have already made their on-stage re-debut with Brit pop-stars including, Dua Lipa, Charli XCX and Anne Marie. Re-affirming their pop star status.
Preuche asserts “I think we are already in the midst of a comeback of Spice Girls and nostalgic 90s trends, this is what I think has spurred the revival of the Buffalo.”
The trend has speedily filtered on to the streets, adopted by cool and casual street style muses. The chunky platforms lend themselves perfectly to an edgy, post- millennium aesthetic, championed by the likes of Bella Hadid and Slick Woods.
The platform kicks have also been a hit amongst bloggers. Stylist turned blogger Megan Ellaby shares “I’ve always loved the platform trainer, its chunky silhouette is so effortlessly cool and works wonders for my 5ft4 frame.”
Ellaby also reveals how she channels the trend into her eclectic style “How I style the trainer depends on my mood, some days I opt for a full-on urban 90s inspired grunge look whereas sometimes I like to juxtapose the trainer with a floaty dress.”
Though the return of the platform trainer may be divisive, the trend certainly leaves us pondering what’s next – the leopard print catsuit or maybe the Union Jack mini dress? Enough to spice up your life.
