When we are protecting the environment, what are we really protecting? The consistency of behaviour and purpose is perhaps more difficult to control than one might think. My grandmother, who lives in today, but retains the habit she developed during the war years of recycling plastic products whenever possible. This habit is prevalent in Chinese society today, but not as extreme. Environmental problems should have been solved with the return to 'universal recycling'. But climate problems, such as extreme weather, are getting worse. The answer may lie in my grandmother's 'collection' of plastic bags.
