Formidable Shrubs

Formidable Shrubs, comprises writing and illustrations that reference classical botanical illustration and written plant journals, these accompany papier-mache sculptures built from miss-prints of ‘Plants’ a book I self published. This gave the works a cyclical production. The material ability of paper to be simultaneously delicate and strong allowed me to emulate and exaggerate form in my shrubs. As I worked and shaped each peice it struck me that this delicate/strong dichotomy is also an apt metaphor for the natural versatility of plant life. I found the container that I built the Shrubs into became important.
