Images produced as part of my A-Level Fine Art unit on British Youth Culture. Focusing on my friend, Yako Kai, portraying her identity as a young artist. Kai uses painting as an outlet for her expression, mixing abstract expressionism with portraiture to create her individual painting style. Her art allows her to escape her ADD and portray overwhelming feelings such as anger, excitement and other fast paced concepts. Her biggest external inspiration is Basquiat. Portraying an androgynous figure through oversized clothing, Kai’s tall stature and her striking facial expressions – similar to Jean Paul x Grace Jones in the 80s. Key masculine features in the shot of Grace Jones are broad shoulders, flat chest and ‘V’ shaped or rectangular torso – blending gender roles when styling Kai in a man’s suit.
