As I began to discover biomorphism whilst researching for my dissertation, I started to incorporate elements of it into my practice. Jean Arp’s ‘collage according to the laws of chance’ in which he created his compositions by allowing the paper elements to fall upon the canvas accordingly plays on autonomy and process. I tried using similar techniques within my own practice, discovering the importance of kinesthetics, movement and freedom. This unconscious way of creating allowed me to move away from physical depictions of the body and focus more on showing its energy, its growth, representing the microscopic and the macro via organic shapes. Collage played a big part in this. The idea of something growing and moving from small fragments into a larger piece intrigued me.
