How can I further investigate my own heritage and relationship with my Dad as a way of better understanding what it means to be English, to me?
This project has a been a personal investigation into my own heritage in an attempt to better understand the idea of Englishness. I wanted to address this subject matter as I have personally always felt a great sense of confusion around what it means to be English and further so, how being born and raised in London has impacted this sense of identity.
My position as a designer is one of investigator and documenter, using photography but more broadly, light as my medium. In doing so, I have created both a series of handprints investigating me and my Dad's relationship through clothing and music as well as a diptych of photograms that displays language taken directly from an interview with my Dad.
