In my response to designing for the opera Un Ballo in Maschera, I decided to focus on textures and materials; letting their visual and symbolic nature lead the design. This costume for the character Ulrica, a fortune teller, was entirely handwoven with raffia. It was designed organically in response to the material and as if the character made it intuitively from nature around her. The various weaving and plaiting takes the viewers on a journey, as Ulrica spins her tales of fortune. Juxtaposed underneath is a loose weave cotton with net tulle and a nest of raffia creating the shape of panniers.
