This project is based on a drawing from Jason Wilsher-Mills that was inspired by a Dalek from Doctor Who. This plus a drawing of a Jellyfish that Wilsher-Mills did is where I my own personal inspiration. By Looking at the Aliens and the clubbing zeitgeist of the 80s I have created textiles and samples based on the patterns, textures and colours that were found.
Dalek 1.0
This was my first attempt at holding circles that didn't work but instead created a diamond shaped pattern that I quite liked as it reminded me of the gaudy patterns of the 80s.
Diamonds
Fashioning was used to create diamonds out of different colours/textures of yarn that were linked together.
Silurian
Latex layered on felt (over bubble wrap for texture) which has been felted into a sample which has a punchcard pattern that I made based on the skin of the Silurians on Doctor Who
Bannakaffalatta
Crocheted cones stuffed with felt that have been stitched onto a dubied cardigan stitch. Spikes are reminiscent of 80s club kid looks and the spikes found on many Doctor Who aliens (much like Bannakaffalatta)
Ood
Various textures of yarn that were fringed onto a plain yellow base. The jumble of dangling yarn is inspired by the tentacles of the Ood.
Red Drone Dalek
Using holding techniques I have created dots that draw inspiration from the spheres seen on the Daleks and a bodysuit that I saw at the "Outlaws: Fashion Renegades of the 80s" exhibition.
