My materials led project delves into the beauty and serenity of the ocean, taking into consideration how humankind has disturbed this eco system and what we as designers can do to help. What does the ocean's future hold? How can we help make it a positive one? Throughout my work I explore the ocean's colours, shapes, sounds, textures and aesthetics, the materials and textile techniques we as fashion designers should be using to preserve it and acknowledging when my materials aren't sustainable and what I could use instead. This project has led me through a journey of learning traditional, eco friendly textile techniques and using found objects. Unfortunately not all of my materials used/samples are 100% sustainable, as I feel that unless systemic change is done, trying to create 100% sustainable textiles is nearly impossible. This project has taught me a lot about materials and techniques and made me more aware/mindful of sustainable practices within the fashion/textiles industry and what I can do in the future to help. I plan on exploring biomaterials and sustainable materials further within my upcoming projects.
