No Longer Roam

This documentary photography project originates from the story of the Ewenki, an ethnic minority in China. in 1965, they experienced their first government-mandated ecological migration while still living as a hunter-gatherer society. However, in 2003, a second wave of ecological migration was enforced, during which the government confiscated their hunting rifles, and the majority of the Ewenki people relocated to cities. Yet, this project is not solely focused on the Ewenki people—it is about the city itself. I see their migration as a direct consequence of government policies, shaping not only their fate but also the urban landscape they were absorbed into. Through this work, I explore how modernization policies have transformed both people and place, redefining cultural identity in the process.
