We have never been so alone in public space as we are today. Even though this common ground should bring us together, allow us to meet and interact — with each other as well as with our environment. Faced with this situation, The Great Odd-y-Sea proposes a counter-space to the capitalist public realm. The project imagines an archipelago of islands in the heart of London, floating on the Thames. These places of escape allow us to detach from the mainland and break away from its rules, in order to imagine and dream of an ‘abnormal’ place. This new type of public space relies on a re-narration of space, a didactic relationship with the landscape, and a regenerative approach — to create a common ground that encourages social interaction. This parallel space seeks to empower the public to become active participants in public space — to shape it, appropriate it, and inhabit it The Great Odd-y-Sea is an ode to transgression, a place of curiosity and surprise in a sanitized urban world, celebrating playfulness, imagination, and the exploration of oneself and others.
