The Glare

Brought into existence after a visit to the National Portrait Gallery’s Munch exhibitions, this painting is a collection of overlapping chance encounters: a piece of canvas conveniently left behind in the campus’ gender-neutral bathroom that I turned over and reused, a stretcher I found on the side of the street… painted over another painting I sketched out and given up on. A pictorial palimpsest of sorts. I thought it would be fitting, while I was taking photos of it in the corridor, to situate it next to another, unnamed student’s sculptural piece. Resulted a strange, almost hostile, atmosphere: is the subject trying to warn us of something? What story is being told here?
