Do you believe what you see, exactly as you see it?This video is a collaborative project between two London-based artists, Svea Beckedorf (fashion designer, ual: Central Saint Martins) from Germany and Seyeong Yoon (video director, ual: London College of Communication) from South Korea.Hemispatial Neglect is a neuropsychological condition where damage to one hemisphere of the brain leads to a deficit in attention to and awareness of one side of the field of vision. It is a rare condition that leaves patients only able to see half of the world, as if only looking through one eye, even if both eyes are open.Inspired by this rare condition, Svea created a unique outfit. Her knitted construction shows bilateral asymmetry around a virtual vertical line down the middle of the garment. One side demonstrates the world as we normally see it, and the other expresses a distorted and controversial world that is visible, but yet lies invisible.Inspired by this extraordinary ensemble, I, the video director, wanted to pose a question to the audience: ‘Do you believe what you see, exactly as you see it?’ Just like the patients of Hemispatial Neglect, a world that one person believes to be whole and true may, in fact, not be reality. Rather, it is a ‘distorted’ world. Reality, itself, is oftentimes distorted and, unfortunately, that distortion then becomes the norm. Therefore, even though I am forced to believe in only what I can biologically and physically see, I am raising a philosophical doubt on the matter.What is the truth? Is seeing believing?
