A single channel video with sound that I made for Korea Town @ Wimbledon Space Gallery, curated by artist Richard Layzell. K-pop provides Asian women the opportunity to challenge the Western archetypes of which they are so frequently prescribed; Asian women are often either infantilised as the ingenue or objectified as the femme fatale. The dominant presence of women in K-pop, either in girl groups like TWICE or as solo artists like HyunA, allows them to explore every facet of their womanhood on their own terms. I wanted the film to celebrate this embrace of their identity and culture as well as their refusal to be predictable.
